Deep up in the mountains of Colorado
there was a small town with not much structure and order. There were constantly
people coming through but no one ever stopped to see what this small,
mysterious town was about. If people did stop they would have found a town full
of stray dogs; they were all ages from newborn puppies to old wise dogs. All of
these dogs came from different backgrounds, such as abusive homes, owners
passing away, and some were even born and raised there.
Finally some hikers were hiking those same
mountains and walked right into a group of the dogs on the outskirts of this
town. The group they walked into were three younger dogs that had a ton of
differences from breed, age and color but were the best of friends. They had
been friends since they could remember. They were wild souls that roamed free
and had zero cares in the world.
Remington and Lucca
The oldest dog was named Remington. He
was a black Labrador Retriever who started out as a hunting dog and was by far the smartest
and most aware of the group. He had lost his owner when he was only two years
old and wandered into the mountains where he found his first best friend,
Lucca. Lucca was a younger Husky who was somewhat aware of what was happening
but got distracted easily from the task at hand. Now Lucca had decided she was
going to run away from her home. Not because she had a rough life... she just wanted to be free
and run until she couldn’t run anymore. Finally the baby of the group was Reed. He never had any clue what was going on and always loved everyone that was
around. He was a Standard Poodle that would walk up to any old stranger and
just love on them. Reed had gotten distracted
and walked away from his owner one day and had been lost forever. All three
dogs brought something unique and interesting to the group and kept them all
together.
Reed
When the hikers walked by, all three
dogs looked up and stared. Remi, being the smart one, stayed down to try and
hide, but Lucca stood up but remembered they were strangers and stayed where she
was. Now Reed saw them and before anyone could hold him back Reed ran to the hikers
and jumped up begging for all the love he could get. When the other two dogs
saw that the hikers weren't hurting Reed, they slowly walked over to the hikers and allowed the strangers to pet
them. Remi on the other hand let them pet him but he was on edge ready to run
at any time. While looking around he heard the hikers planning a trip back
through to capture a dog so they could have a hiking companion. He knew then
and there it was his duty to keep his best friends safe.
Days
went by after the hikers had left and he was keeping an eye out but there was nothing. About two weeks
after the encounter Remi smelt a strange smell in the air and was looking
around to find the source. Finally he spotted the hikers far in the woods with ropes
and leashes. As they started whistling he could see both Lucca and Reed looking
around to find the source. He yelled out and told them not to run but it was
too late. Both had started that way. When he yelled Lucca got back on track and
turned around, but Reed was too far gone. He ran straight into their trap where they quickly had captured Reed and took him on their way. As much as they
wanted to chase after them they knew they wouldn't make it out if they followed. Lucca
and Remington cried and were sad for weeks, but they knew that one day if Reed
could get away he would come back to them.
Author’s
Notes:
This piece was a unique transition to the “The story of the Three
Fish.” Three fish were living peacefully when some fishermen came to catch them. When the fish found this out the firs fish ran into the outsource of the pond, the second one pretended to be dead, and the third got caught because it didn't plan a way out. The fish did a similar thing
where they were all different on how they stayed away from the fishermen and
finally one fish got caught because it didn’t have any awareness of the situation around
them. Now the other fish did not try to help that fish which also makes my
story feel a little bit lighter and an easier read, plus instead of getting
eaten like the end of the fish story there is hope that one day Reed will come back
to them. I feel like this story has a moral of being aware what is around you
and listening to advice of the people you care about. I switched the theme from
fish to dogs because I enjoy dogs a lot more and on top of that the three dogs
I used are three dogs in my life that all have these personality types. I wanted to write about them because
they are my favorite beings in the world and I thought I would be able to
really expand the characters because of how personal it is. Lucca is my
personal dog that I talked about earlier this semester and then Remington and Reed
are my nephews or “god dogs”. All of them make my life a better and I hope this
story can do the same for the reader.
