Introduction to me

Hello!

My name is Asaleigh but most of my friends and family call me Ace. I'll respond to either so feel free to chose either one. I grew up in Bend Oregon and moved here for school. I miss home sometimes but enjoy the experience I am gaining by being in Oklahoma. To switch it up I thought I would give a couple fun facts for my introduction.

One is that I am fluent in American Sign Language. I started my freshman year in high school and have continued learning and using it through today. I plan on getting my interpreting license after graduating with my Language Arts Education Degree. I enjoy it more then any other hobby I have and plan on improving this skill for the rest of my life.

Another cool fact is that I have a puppy. She is Husky and Blue Heeler mix and is a playful 9 months old old. She also is already so spoiled by everyone in her life. She keeps me busy for sure. She is my first puppy and has been a life style change in the few short weeks I have had her. Her name in Lucca and is the sweetest  little thing you will ever meet. She is supposed to get the size of a lab and have tons of personality because of the two breeds she is. I will try and keep updates on her throughout the semester on how big she is getting and different milestones she hits.

Hope you enjoyed a few fun facts and can not wait to learn more about all of you. I am excited to experience this class and the new idea of blogging. If you want to know more feel free to ask! I am an open book and will attempt to answer everything.

  1. Hi Ace! Your dog is definitely one of the most adorable dogs I have seen (kind of makes me jealous of you). I keep telling myself I cannot get any kind of animal until I graduate college, since I live by myself now I feel like I would not give it as much attention as needed. Sign language is such a beautiful language. Did you learn just because you thought it would be interesting or to communicate with someone you know? Thanks for sharing a little bit about yourself with us!

  2. Hello, Ace! Thanks for sharing a little about your life. Especially that photo--I don't know that I'm a dog person through-and-through, but I definitely have a special soft spot for huskies. Have you had the chance to take her back to Oregon with you? I bet she would love the weather & woods up there. I've never been to the Northwest, but I've seen and heard such incredible things from friends, and that's where I'm planning to go next. Oklahoma can be topographically bland, but that just makes me appreciate other places all the more when I get to travel!
I remember growing up with my sister and one of our close family friends, Mandy, always signing to each other. I'm sure I had bits and pieces back then, but I've forgotten them now. It is such a neat language, with its own community and culture. Props to you for going into interpreting!

  3. Oh, Ace, your puppy is just beautiful! And those are such great breeds, all curious and lively and playful. Definitely keep us updated: maybe she can be part of the stories you write for class. Or memes that you make. Nine months is kind of a dog teenager, right? That must be so much fun!

And I am hoping you can find ways to connect up this class to your Language Arts Degree! If you want to try to write some stories for children, for example, that could be great; you could even try using some of those Common Core lexiles or other measures. I'm not a big fan of the formulas they use to rate grade levels, but I know that is something teachers have to know about these days, so if you want to practice those kinds of writing constraints, trying to see if you can write stories at a third-grade level or sixth-grade level or whatever, that might be such a cool experiment. Not all the adventures in the epics are suitable for children, but lots are. In the Ramayana, for example, the adventures of the monkey-god Hanuman are great for all ages!

  4. Hi Ace, I love dogs and the fact that you can one just makes me happy. Please keep us updated on her, she is so cute. I bet she's very spoiled, I would spoil her too. I love that you are fluent in sign language, most people don't learn that language or take the effort to become fluent in it. Oklahoma is very different than a lot of states because there's not much to do here but with the right group of friends and company you can make the most of it.

  5. Hello Ace! Oregon is so far away, and I'm sure Oklahoma was a huge change. What do you think of it? Personally, I've never been to Oregon, but my boss recently went to Portland on a business trip and he raved about it, so it's definitely on my list.

It's so cool that you've stuck with American Sign Language! When I was younger, it was part of my school's curriculum but I only ever learnt the alphabet. What pushed you to start?

Your husky puppy has the most gorgeous eyes. Please do keep us updated and especially with pictures :)

  6. That's a gorgeous dog!
While school tends to stress learning foreign languages, it seems we forget that ASL is a very thing to know.
I've always wanted to go to Oregon. I'm a big nature lover, so anywhere near a forest and mountains is where I want to be. I'm sure it's a huge change coming to Oklahoma, what with its lack of mountains.

  7. Welcome to Oklahoma! Are there any big differences you've noticed between here and home? I'm always interested to know how places are different. It is wonderful that you are fluent in ASL! I've always wanted to learn but I feel that I don't have the brain power to learn it all that well. I wish you the best of luck in getting your license! Your puppy is SO CUTE. I can't imagine how you wouldn't be able to spoil that sweet face! Definitely keep us updated on her size and any other fun things she does! Nice to meet you!

  8. Hi Ace! Your puppy is so cute! Husky and Blue Heeler is an awesome combination. You are a very far way from home...I hope you're liking it in Oklahoma! That is so cool that you are fluent in ASL! I really want to be fluent in it someday, I think it is just so incredible. I took a beginning sign class at OCCC last semester and that was super fun. Have you heard of the musical Spring Awakening? They revived it last year on Broadway and half the cast was deaf so not only were people speaking and singing, but everyone was constantly signing at the same time! There are videos of the whole show on YouTube if you're ever interested in watching it!

  9. First of all, Asaleigh is such a cool name! Second, I LOVE YOUR DOG! I am a huge dog person and I'm so glad that you included a picture! She is so cute! I also think that it's amazing that you are fluent in American Sign Language. That is so interesting and a very useful skill to have. I think that will help you so much in life! It's great to meet you!

  10. Hi Asaleigh! I just have to star this post out by saying your dog is so pretty! I would love to hear about her milestones! I think it is absolutely incredible that you are fluent in American sign language. I definitely do not have the patience to try and learn something of that caliber so I think it is very commendable that you have done that! I hope you have a great semester!

  11. Hi Ace! Great introduction, I liked learning the few little tidbits about you. ASL! Very cool! My mother-in-law knows this, and keeps gently signing to my 1 year old things all the time. He's a sponge, and has picked up a few things, which is really neat. How are you liking your Language Arts Education degree program? Any interesting classes? I considered a Linguistics degree for a while, but, well, my brother-in-law has that degree (and a Classics degree, which I also consider nearly every semester around enrollment time), and I had to vary it up! I'm pursuing International Area Studies. It sounds like you're set up for a job on the otherside when you're through, though!

P.S. How's the puppy doing now that we're 2 months into the semester? Still good?

  12. Hi Ace! I really enjoyed your introduction! I can sorta relate with you about being far away from home and missing it. I am from Tennessee so it is far away as well! I love your puppy! About a year ago I decided to get a dog in college and it was one of the best decisions I made. He's the best and I hope you and Lucca are still doing well together!

  13. I love Oregon! My great aunt and uncle have a house tucked away in a small, hilly range and it is just beautiful. We always go there for family reunions and like to go white-water rafting, hiking, camping, etc. I can't imagine what it is like to be from such a stunning place! Also, your dog is absolutely ADORABLE.

  14. Back again... out of curiosity, are you intending to use your proficiency in American Sign Language in your role as a Language Arts teacher? Are you intending to teach it? I think that's such a valuable role and I really admire you for taking the time to learn ASL. The ability to communicate with deaf or hearing-impaired people is something that people don't think about often enough.

  15. It is good to finally meet you! Your puppy is so adorable! (although, I'm sure she's grown quite a bit since the beginning of the semester) I grew up around many labs, and can say that their puppy phase is quite a handful, but well worth it. What part of Oregon are you from? I'm applying to medical school in Yakima, Washington because I think I'd really like the weather in that area of the country.

  16. Hello Ace! I love your nickname! I have never been able to visit Oregon but it sounds like a really cool place to visit! Being able to sign must be a very good atrubute to have in some situations! I also love Lucca’s eyes I have a Bordercollie / Aussie mix that has 2 different colored eyes also! It looks really cool!

  17. Hi Ace!
I am so jealous you are from Oregon.. I am going to Portland for spring break and am so excited. It looks soon pretty over there! I lived in Colorado last summer and loved it so I think I will really enjoy Portland.
That is so cool you are into sign language. I have always admired when people are using sign language. It is so beautiful and fascinating.
Your dog is so cute!! I love a husky! I want a little pomski! they are soon cute.
Wish you luck with the rest of your semesters!

  18. Hey Ace! What a different experience it must be coming from Oregon to Oklahoma, is there a lot of differences in the day to day life between the two states? Sign language seems like a really useful and helpful language to know, how did you get started? Also, I'm a huge animal lover and would love to get updates on Lucca! Hope she's doing well!
